Preparing Our Students for Life in a Digital World

Today’s children are known as Digital Natives. Almost all of them will use computers, smartphones, tablets, video game consoles, and other forms of technology before even reaching adulthood. Too often, however, they don’t know the potential dangers and pitfalls of these tools. The Federal e-Rate program requires that all schools receiving e-Rate funds implement a program to train their students in Digital Citizenship. Common Sense Media offers districts free support and resources to offer this instruction; with lesson plans, handouts, assessments, videos, and more. Come learn how to get the most out of this valuable web site.

Cell Phones in the Classroom

We know students have phones; they are on them constantly, so how do we develop ways to have students use their phones productively in class? No matter what people tell you, students are not as tech savvy as we think: they text, maybe tweet, Facebook and sometimes game. They do not see phones as tools for learning. For teachers, we need to utilize curriculum and develop classroom management strategies that help students to use phones productively. You will walk away with tested classroom management strategies that work along with lesson ideas and online resources that you can use with your students on their phones starting right away. We will also go over some of the legal concerns you will want to be aware of to keep your parents and administrators informed and involved in the process.
